The High Road
D'awww! Drugged Kakashi is utterly adorable. I love how he's hyper-sensitive to danger, but utterly oblivious to the social undercurrents in the room.
Excellent work, everybody. Thanks so much!

Thanks for posting!
It's awesome to check back and find a new thread. Noticed that when Kakashi was naming people who'd be hurt by his death, he left out his mother. Just wondering if that says anything about his relationship with her.

<3 Its so fluffy!!~~
Loved the chapter. Thank you :D loved how cheeky Kakashi is when he's drugged loll. Kudos to the smiley face comment 'the third one before it starts crying'(or something), and how he rejected coconuts but not butterbean pastry nickname haha. Katsuko's gold with the affectionate nicknames >w

Such a sweet thread/chapter!
This was incredible. Kakashi's state of mind truly was marvelous to behold: when he's drugged up, he sure is rather dorky, or rather, adorkable. Even when high on medications, Kakashi is quite perceptive, though said high does slow down both his thoughts and reactions; also, it seems that his nose cannot be deceived, which is wonderful.
As he manages to still be snarky, and behaves more flakey (and cuddly) than usual, he must've been a sight to behold to the other members of Team Six. Katsuko is made of awesomeness, and Ryouma needs a hug - join the cuddle pile, as Katsuko might've put it.
I especially like the way this Kakashi-based thread starts and ends, with Obito watching over him in a drugged-up dream. Beautiful work.
As per usual, the writing was superb, with great descriptions and well-chosen words. Though I'm incredibly happy to have an entire thread dedicated to Kakashi's POV (- and I must admit that I like him the best, even though the other characters are nothing short of brilliant, too) it saddened me that there were no parts written by the others; it's understandable though, especially considering all of the Real-life Problems that like getting into the way of writing. (Hopefully, all will be well in days to come. My best wishes to Ki in particular!)
Anyways, there's more to love about this chapter: the importance of Kakashi's smell was portrayed exceedingly well. It is often overlooked just how important this particular sense is, and to have it put into a spotlight (because Kakashi is /known/ for having a great sense of smell) is something I enjoy reading about a lot. It was highly amusing~
Yup, I liked this thread, and now I'll be off to read it a second time (and perhaps a third). Thank you, sincerely, for having written this. You guys are godsend.

The High Road
Kakashi snapping out of a coma because (Obito told him to) he smelled blood. Thinking he was glad to not be dead because it would cause pain for Minato and Naruto. Knowing that Rin was going to give him a disapproving look for over using his chakara. Kakashi doesn't need enemies, he knows how to beat himself up just fine. It was fun to watch his interactions with his teammates when they were all just a little bit off their game (due to drugs and trauma).
“S’okay,” he said, hazy. “Whatever it is, we can kill it.”
Ryouma’s laugh shivered in the air, raspy. “Sure. If anyone could, it’d be you.” He put his hand up over Kakashi’s, fingers long and calloused, and slid Kakashi’s hand off his face, tugging it down to rest on the rumpled blankets between them. He didn’t pull his hand back afterwards. “Go to sleep, Kakashi.”
I think this team is going to kick ass.
Thanks for sharing

Terrific new story!
Kakashi high on the "good" drugs -- hilarious and needed after such a painful set of missions. Even better is what it allowed, insight by his teammates into Kakashi, seeing pieces that he normally would not permit. I love how with his inhibitions largely put to sleep, his protectiveness towards his teammates and ability to perceive potential threats remains, but his self-imposed walls protecting himself have holes. A great showing of what is truly important to him. Each of the other characters' reactions were perfect. Even stronger team bonds seems a likely possible outcome -- assuming the hopeful signs of Ryouma beginning to feel better pan out.
So loving this AU, and the outstanding writing that makes all of us fans so happy!

The High Road
Oh, you all, you leave me speechless! I read these amazing threads and feel compelled to express my utter adoration of them, then find that I am completely unable to articulate even part of it.
But, I'll make the attempt anyway.
I continue to love Katsuko's pet names for Kakashi. And Kakashi's reactions to them. Such as:
"Genma shifted in the distance. “Ready to lie back down?”
“M’comfortable,” Kakashi protested. “Stop making me move.”
Katsuko stirred, peeling herself away from Raidou’s side to poke him gently in the ribs. “If you lie down, you can get hugged on both sides, my lovely coconut sprinkle.”
“Coconut’s gross,” Kakashi said, wrinkling his nose.
“My lovely butterbean pastry?”
“Okay,” he said, and pushed himself away from Ryouma’s shoulder—or tried to.
(Sorry, I don't know how to make that italicized)
Where on Earth do you come up with these!? Haha, I love them. And I love Kakashi haggling with her for a more palatable nickname.
Ooh, bad pun. Sorry! I'll go sit in the corner with Genma....
Speaking of whom, this scene filled me with utter glee:
“What pain?” Kakashi said, coasting on a new surf of narcotics.
“Zero out of ten? That’s good.” Genma held up one hand, three rawboned fingers extended. “How many fingers?”
“Eleven,” Kakashi said, and laughed at his own joke.
Two fingers folded down, leaving the index still standing. “Try again.”
“Three point one-four-one-five-nine...” Kakashi derailed at Genma’s expression, still laughing.
Genma closed his mouth on what was either surprise or amusement, and continued the sequence: “Two-six-five-three-five. How many really?”
“One,” Kakashi confessed.
Haha, they're both such nerds, reciting pi from memory. And considering I once memorized pi to the hundredth decimal, "nerd" is high praise from me!
I also love when Genma starts speaking in medical jargon. I spend most of my work day reading through medical records, and the way Genma phrases things reads really true to me.
These characters are all so very human, and it's wonderful to read. There are so many tiny details that just come together to make these stories so real. Like the way Raidou grabs Ryouma's shoulder near the end of the thread, then messes up his hair. Such a small gesture, but it conveys so much.
Okay, I'll stop bothering you with my rambling now :)
P.S. I'm sorry to hear so many of you are having such a trying time with health and real life issues! I wish you all the best of luck with them, and hope you're feeling better soon. Take care!
FYI, in the thread index, the link to "Shoot the Messenger" is broken.

I’m so sorry I haven’t reviewed earlier! And I’m sorry to hear about all your struggles with your health and other issues – I hope Ki & GM feel better soon :)
I can’t express how much I’ve loved these past 4 threads! I’ve read them multiple times, and every time I notice something else that I love. Are you ready for the rant? Here we go:
Ryouma – I love how you’ve pushed him so that you can see more of his deadliness as well as more of his cracks. Every time Ryouma is disbelieving that he’ll actually learn to heal just makes me want to hug him. He’s trying so hard to deal with his issues because he loves his team, and I truly admire the way you write his struggle. Also, he inspires me to be more fit. The 69 situps in a minute in training? The glacial reverse crunch? Arrgghh ninja abs
Genma – He’s been such a rock for his team, just by being consistent and not crossing any boundaries. Raidou’s a tough person to support on a personal level since he’s so used to being strong and trying so hard to be a good captain. I like how he’s an authority figure who’s in the position to really help Ryouma grow without all the messy history that he has with Raidou.
And Raidou was great with Ryouma. I think he handled their history really well, and I like how he sincerely wants the best for Ryouma.
His fight scene was wonderfully written *jumps around crazily* GENJUTSU YESSSS. You crafted a mission that really pushed every single character in a different, deeply personal way. WOW. I loved how we could see the super professional side – the planned assassination, fast with incredible precision. Then you showed us the chaos of battle, and how everyone reverts to their signature jutsu and unique fighting style. Your fighting scenes give this sense of blinding speed, like if you blink you’ll miss Kakashi killing someone. And we get to see Raidou’s cracks, which you’ve been hinting about for a while.
Katusko’s reaction to her team’s injuries was the best! All that violent craziness turns into such a fierce desire to protect her team.
“She made an infuriated, unintelligible sound and crowded in close, jabbing a finger into Ryouma’s chest. “You can rot demons the size of a mountain!” Then she jabbed her finger at Kakashi’s face. “And you can cut lightning in half! Why the festering hell do you both look like chuunin who got dragged ass-backward through an A-rank?””
HAHA YES! That was so perfect.
I loved how Raidou described her, about how she cares so much. And it made me laugh how she had no idea how to show her team except to feed them. Every time she opens her mouth I love her more. This part just made me so happy, I have no idea what to say.
“No one had come through the war intact, but Katsuko had taken all her sharp, broken places and turned them into weapons. And underneath that, she’d still managed to keep a little softness. She ate terrible foods and said idiot things, but she cared so deeply about her teammates—even the new ones—that it nearly made her vibrate. As much as she bullied them, she’d still die for them.”
Also, so impressed by how you keep track of all the clones. My head hurts just trying to visualize them.
I liked how Kakashi couldn’t just win against Iebara on his own, despite how talented he is. The way you highlight the critical teamwork is so perfect. It was also nice that he had the chance to get to know his team and protect them in their first mission BEFORE being totally knocked out of the game and vulnerable in front of his team. And now that he’s really sunk his heart into the team, every instinct tries to protect them – even concussed, drugged up, and exhausted. I can’t wait to see Rin chew him out and then everyone he knows ganging up to make him rest and heal. Yay for team hugs :) If that's how Katsuko and Naruto meet, I will definitely be cackling.
High! Kakashi was absolutely hilarious and made my week. And was a total contrast to the absolute focus and violence of the mission - puppies versus tigers. The team will never let him forget his fainting habit. His attempts to encourage Ryouma and Katsuko were adorable, as was the hair petting. Please make Kakashi hair petting a team thing
You all blew my expectations out of the water and I can’t thank you enough :)

Mama Come Home
Poor Yuuichi. He seems like such a gentle soul. To loose his wife without even a body to grief over. No wonder he doesn't like ninja visiting his home late at night. Poor little Genma.
Such a sad back story even though we all knew it had happened. Thank you for sharing.
Oh, thank you so much! That was gorgeous. Of course that would be the moment he cries; you can only hold it together for so long when your child is grieving. Or, rather, completely uncomprehending of grief, so you know you'll have to keep reopening wounds until they understand.
This really brings new insight into his observation that if Genma had died on his mission, they would have sent two ninja to tell him. So lovely.

Rest for the Wicked
Lovely blend of silly and serious. If only Katsuko had been telling truths about the lack of sufficient goats for the quartermaster. ;)
Drugged Kakashi remains awesome Kakashi, and his tanto-cuddling was almost as outstanding as his outrage over uneven hair tufts.
I really liked Ryouma's handling of his literacy issue.
Katsuko is still an endless onion and we all love her for it.
I look forward to seeing Genma's icing roses, and Raidou's report post-mission.
Thank you all!

OH I love this thread Rest For the Wicked!! I would miss this morphine-high kakashi once he sobers up :]
And the little glipmse of their past through this game. Raidou's cuddling toy and katsuko's jounin sensei and all. i'M particularly surprused that kakashi actually mentioned his father during this. Go morphine. Though I'm curious how minato /tried/ to steal ukki-kun and yet succeeded? Cause I seriously thought ryouma's logic was valid :D
(PS I don't think I understand how this jounal/community works yet @_@ tried roaming around&make an account but utterly failed :[ )
I love how Katsuko is sort of the stealth confidante for the kids - her quirkiness doesn't overpower the seriousness at the core of her. It's really great watching their friendships bloom in really different ways, and seeing that they all don't relate to each other in quite the same way, but equally importantly.
She looked up at him, sideways. Her face was still tired and too pale, but a smile grew slowly at the corners of her mouth. "You remembered? I'm touched." She patted his knee. "Let's do it. You can dress up sexy, and I can dress up sexier, and you can buy me food while you help me pick up hot people."
The cuteness! I love that each plan involves dragging Kakashi along in some shape or form.
“You’ll never see the pictures,” Raidou said, with a bland confidence that implied there were pictures somewhere. And that he didn’t mind their existence.
I love Raidou. I love Raidou's moms.
Ka, ka. That was easy enough. One vertical line, another crossing it at right angles, then hooking sharply down. Shi was two horizontal lines and then a third, swooping below. The crinkled tube of the syrette didn't take the ink well, but the markings were at least visible.
Probably he could just have scribbled a black mark, and it would've done as well.
It felt very real to me that Ryouma's dyslexia was sort of overlooked, and the effort he had to put into writing, and pushing back his humiliation.
Genma's concern about being senior/professional and his sort of wavering authority is fun too; he clearly isn't used to having authority, and finds it hard to get the balance right.
Unconvincingly, Kakashi said, “No.”
“Uh huh,” Katsuko said. “Of course you aren’t, petal. Will you eat if I eat?”
Kakashi sighed. “Okay.”
THE MOST ADORABLE.
A non-medic ANBU could carry a single syrette on a mission as long as they returned it either unused or with a documented injury that had required it. Captains could carry up to three, with the same sign-out-and-document rules.
I also love that Kakashi is the only one who prepped the kits to the max +some. Because obviously. Horror and relief, haha.

Why Do You Do This to Me?
I just read Sound the Bells and I am in pain. Pain, I tell you.
Poor Raidou. D: Please don't break up Team Six - even if the break is temporary, my heart will be damaged. :( (and I dunno how our lovely leads will hand it either. I think Genma'd take it the best and that's not saying much)
I love Kurenai, though. Props to whoever's writing her.
There is a lot to love in both these entries, but the one moment that really got me was Kakashi's hesitation to take out Katsuko's hair work.
Which is not to say that I didn't absolutely adore the characterization for everybody, the fierce protectiveness of the team for each other, and Kurenai's everything. :D
I love love love Raidou's moms.

One of Those Lives (Get Used to It) / Sound the Bells
One of Those Lives (Get Used to It)
Teeeeeeeam. I love this team. I love who sweet and sort of dreadful the kids are together.
You know what? High Kakashi never gets old.
But what I really want to say, and I know I've said it before, is that I adore how much Katsuko, Ryouma and Kakashi group up together as a teeny tiny unit within their team hierarchy. Vs their two grouchy dads.
Kakashi wanting flowery scrubs!
I also love love love that the kids have their own complicated relationships within their own little group, and that each friendship is unique.
And Kakashi and Rin, and Rin getting to see that Kakashi really is managing to make his own important connections and friendships. <3
Sound the Bells
It was really fun to see Kurenai in this universe! And the fact that she has a pre-existing relationship with Rin and Katsuko, so is coming at the situation from a completely different angle.
Riei was extolling the rumored aesthetic virtues of Team Six's first rookie, Tousaki Ryouma, who was reportedly illiterate but would occasionally and helpfully bend over to pick up dropped pencils. Ha!
It's interesting to see how Kurenai deals with her sympathy for the situation but coming at it as a debriefer.

Tell You My Sins (So You Can Sharpen Your Knife) / Little Lion Man / Natural Disaster
Tell You My Sins (So You Can Sharpen Your Knife)
Raidou shook his head mutely, trying and failing to find words or control. His throat was a raw ache. His eyes burned. There was a pen tucked behind Ume’s right ear, waiting to get back to work on her student’s small disasters, and Raidou thought, I killed a baby.
It was the last thought on a tower of others, and it broke them all down. He pressed his hands over his face and came apart, choking on tears that boiled up and wouldn’t stop.
I liked seeing who Raidou gets to be when he is away from his team and doesn't have to be the responsible one anymore.
Little Lion Man
Omg, Naruto is so adorable. And not that kind of adorable where they are so precocious and cute that it becomes annoying?
"I don't mind," Ogata-san said briefly, and took off her eyepatch.
There was a hollow where her eye should have been, and a knotted mess of scar tissue, all faded red. Naruto made an excited noise and tried to jump out of his chair to get closer and see, but Dad grabbed him and put him back down.
The corner of Ogata-san's mouth twitched up. She said to Naruto, "We didn't have masks, the way Turtle-san does, when I was young."
She was Turtle's aunt. She had been ANBU until she lost her eye, under Nidaime, when they were just barely beginning to be ANBU, and then she had been a jounin sensei twice, and then she'd retired after the war and gone to cooking school in Hikouto, only she lost her job at the last restaurant she worked at because she threw a cleaver at the head chef.
Naruto started bouncing again. "Did you take his head off? So he's not head chef anymore?"
This time Ogata-san laughed. "No," she said. She told Dad, "He'd cornered one of the youngest waitresses in a storeroom."
I love Naruto and Kakashi together, I really do. Also, the Fourth Hokage trying to bite the toast when it pops out of the toaster.
Genma's dad is also adorable. Actually, everyone's parents so far are pretty damn adorable. I can't wait to see what Kakashi's mom is like...

When Your World Starts Crashing Down / Pour Me Something Stronger
When Your World Starts Crashing Down
Genma having to take charge and be the leader instead of the mediator. <3
“I need your help, Hatake. Fear takes ninja apart, and it takes teams apart. We can’t let it. We have to prepare for the worst but operate on the assumption that they’ll do their investigation and clear Taichou of any wrongdoing. Tousaki’s still fragile from the mission, and Ueno’s obviously going to be hit hard by this. Help me think of the best way to handle them.”
Hehehe, best tactic.
“First Mate, technically,” Kakashi said. He rummaged under the pillow and freed the lurking bird, dropping it onto his knee. It looked a little worse for the wear from having been crumpled. “Naruto-kun dropped by,” he said, face coloring above the edge of his mask.
I love this tiny team and how much they try to hold each other up and look after each other.
Pour Me Something Stronger
I liked seeing Ryouma outside of his team environment, where he doesn't have to reign himself in and be careful all of the time. And Ayane and Hakone are really well-fleshed out and complicated in their own rights.
Re-enacting the battle with dinner! Friends! These guys make a sweet little team, and it was nice having them look out for each other and subtly help each other too.

Trouble Round My Door
I woke up to this, you have no idea how happy I was.
But anyway! Since I'm a bit more coherent and can give a better review:
I loved, loved, loved Kurenai and Kakashi's interaction. So very believable! Especially since we know she's working to get Raidou's name cleared, but also needing to do her job. I also loved the little Intel-team interactions in the beginning; it serves very well to remind us that ANBU Team Six doesn't just live in a void, and that other people have work that needs to be done, too.
I also loved the way you showed Ryouma characterization from Kurenai's point of view. It's nice to see what other characters who aren't part of the regular cast think, sometimes. And Minato!
“I brought you a book,” he said, holding up a small paperback with a bright cover, “but it looks like you’ve got entertainment enough already.”
“I’m the most popular girl in the village,” Kakashi agreed, making a gimme gesture. Minato underhanded the book to him. Kakashi turned it over, skimming eagerly down the blurb on the back. Hisakawa’s latest novel promised a feast of corrupt samurai, hill bandits with hearts of gold, and a pair of young lovers trapped between the two. Kakashi grinned behind his mask.
“I was hoping you hadn't read that one,” Minato said, pulling up the chair Kurenai had vacated earlier and settling in by Kakashi’s bedside. The spot he chose had perfect sightlines to three-quarters of the room and the door, but Minato made its selection look entirely accidental. “The clerk said it only came out last month, so I figured I was safe. Let me know when you finish it, and I'll buy the second trashiest book I can find.”
“Just because it’s not highbrow doesn’t mean it’s trash,” Kakashi said, tucking the book protectively under his pillow, where his tanto and First Mate still lurked. “But feel free to buy me a book any time you want to escape a council meeting.”
Minato’s lopsided smile said, caught.
It's nice to see that Minato still does inane things like bring Kakashi trashy books in the hospital and skip out on council meetings - he's only human, after all, even with the title of the Yondaime Hokage. And his characterization.
Kakashi said, "Don't let the council sell out Namiashi-taichou because repairs are expensive. We can do more missions. It's harder to get more captains."
“Thank you for your counsel,” Minato said, bone-dry. “I can see you’ve been very well briefed on our financial and personnel situations.” He dropped his hand to the chair arm, and tapped his fingers rhythmically just once. “Rest assured, I don’t sell Konoha’s blood lightly.”
But he still would, if he had to.
The precarious balance between caring for people on a personal level and the fact that he needs to act like the Yondaime Hokage is perfectly spot-on to Minato, I think. Kudos to Ki for that!
(I also loved the fact that Kakashi is unshamedly using his connection to the Hokage to see if he can sway Raidou's final outcome. It's so very much him,
the Kakashi that ANBU Legacy and DK painted, where he's prickly and stand-offish sometimes, yes, but also caring for what he thinks is his.
And Team Six is certainly his right now, isn't it?)
I can't wait to see what else you guys release! : D
2015-03-28 09:40 am (UTC)
Loved loved loved 'God save the foolish kings' - fantastic title, too, btw. I love that your T&I is a precision instrument, not a blunt one.
I've done a little binge-reading of what I missed during the semester and wanted to drop a few thoughts while I have 'em in my brain.
Firstly: I do so adore Kurenai. I believe we were in Kakashi’s POV and he dedscribed her as, “not the knife, but the twist,” and that was just so incredibly telling of her character. I love her history with Kakashi and that little bits of that old anger seeped out the edges. I also loved that we got to see a good portion of Kakashi and Ryouma's conversation through her eyes; it added some really fascinating commentary on their characters we wouldn't have gotten from their POV.
Raidou’s moms and home life? So genuine and lovely. The glimpses into his home added so much depth to his character and to the world-building as a whole. That entire thread was one surprise after another. You had me utterly convinced that Raidou's journey into Shibata's office was going to be gloomy and uncomfortable, but then: comfy chairs and tea. Everything i learned about Shibata in that thread was unexpected, and that is so absolutely in character for him. I really have to hand it to you for keeping all those pieces of conversation in tact. My head was spinning trying to keep up with Shibata, and through that you still showcased Shibata's incredible capacity for controlling a situation. It was awesome.
One thing I need to slip in is how wonderfully you guys have rooted these characters into the world. These off-mission threads that give me little glimpses into the lives of the characters and where they came from make the world feel so tangible. You've given these characters such rich life outside their missions and ANBU masks and that takes some serious thought and dedication.
Thank you guys so much for sharing your awesome writing! <3

You are gods
Because this writing is amazing. I don't think I will ever be able to read any other fan fiction after reading ANBU Legacy.
First, the thing that stood out for me were the scenes with Naruto, because they're so realistic. Never seen Naruto as a real toddler before. A lot of original published fiction can't even do that properly.
And the way you dealt with the Kyuubi problem - kind of felt stupid for never thinking of that (Kushina dying so killing the fox) before, especially since in Naruto the Kyuubi never wants Naruto to die and protects him (in a selfish way, of course). I love Minato being alive. You portray him perfectly (and probably a lot better than Kishimoto, ha).
Writing-style again, the way you all manage to hold the same writing style so the changes in writer aren't annoying is pretty damn amazing as well.
Just in love with this. So polished and perfect.
If I can ever write as well as this, I'm dying happy.
To me, this isn't even fan fiction anymore. It is literature and feelings and connection.
Thanks again :)

Oh my gosh. Reading The Morning Breaks and now we know that everyone knows about Raidou and Ryouma sleeping together, though not everyone knows who knows about this. And I can't help but think that this does SUCH a great job about showing how hard it is to keep a secret around a bunch of ninjas/spys. I feel like I see authors comment upon that fact a lot, but it's more or less just done in the background for sharing information. This is the first time I really feel like I've *seen* it happen. And it's hilarious.
