Oh, thank you so much! That was gorgeous. Of course that would be the moment he cries; you can only hold it together for so long when your child is grieving. Or, rather, completely uncomprehending of grief, so you know you'll have to keep reopening wounds until they understand.

This really brings new insight into his observation that if Genma had died on his mission, they would have sent two ninja to tell him. So lovely.

Thank you so much, myeerah! That's exactly what I was aiming for. I've been the adult around a child who just wasn't old enough to comprehend the world-changing tragedy that had happened to his family; it's heartbreaking.

This really brings new insight into his observation that if Genma had died on his mission, they would have sent two ninja to tell him.

It really does. I love writing Yuuichi's perspective on the ninja world. The heartbreak for both ninja and civilians alike left behind when there are mission deaths is another huge part of the background pathos of this world that must color everyone's lives in Konoha.
