Suffer the Children
So I get to see a past glimpse of Genma at 16 (a chuunin) rescuing Anko from her sensei Orochimaru. So much for celebrating the world at peace.
Glad you guys are writing again.

Chirstmas come early!
Hello! It's been so long! It's such a surprise! I'm so excited to see everyone in their new iterations. It's kind of strange because after so long we know them so well but now they're here, again, younger and with a twists!
I cannot wait to see more! I loved 'Burning on the Western Front'! And oh gosh, it'll be great to see Katsuko! And Ryouma! (Squee) and Genma and Raidou and Kakashi and --- HRNGHHH. I do really like the new backstories wherein the characters have families for a while longer than in FL! It's really interesting to see how they've turned out. And new characters! Oh, the joy.
I admit I haven't been keeping up to date with the Naruto world in general, but I had continued to read Fallen Leaves after I stopped reading the canon, and now it continues with Legacy. This guestbook message is less of a comment regarding the writing, but more of a general spazzing of excitement.
Thank you guys for taking the time out of your busy busy exciting lives to write this! :)
Leia (Or well, not sure if you'll remember, but Silvercaffiene, when I was on livejournal a couple years back!)

From Here on Out
Welcome Raidou and Katsuko. Anbu may never be the same. Raidou and Katsuko play well off each other. I enjoyed my short visit with Isamu and Mitarou as well. Hope to see them around from time to time. Raidou has always been one of my favorite characters from Fallen Leaves and you have kept every quality I loved about him and gave him two Moms ^_^
Actually you've taken my 4 favorites from Fallen Leaves and added the new kid as a favor. I think I can figure out who the two new rookies Katsuko gets to torture and Raidou's new lieutenant are going to be. And I couldn't be happier.
Katsuko and Raidou came off as hard as nail in this story, but then they showed what things about them make them uniquely them. Nice intro to this new world!
Thanks for sharing.

We Were Giants Once
So Ryouma is still the orphan. I am so glad he is here. I like that he can have more flaws here(he drinks), but he still has his Ryoums charm. Glad he found his way back to Konoha to finish what he'd started, even if he was almost an old man by then ^_^ I am so glad you brought Ryouma back to Fallen Leaves and thrilled you have him here. I can't wait to see what the thirteen-year-old hooligan becomes.
Thanks for sharing.

Burning on the Western Front
The War, its amazing any of them survived with an ounce of sanity (if they do have any). Raidou at 18 has outlived many of his comrades and and put through way to much. and yet he isn't scarred yet.
"Friday is a long, cold-clouded day of waiting, feeling impatience buzz in his ears and itch under his skin, and it's almost a relief when the first set of explosions blow another squad into unarticulated body parts.
Saturday and Sunday — wash, rinse, repeat."
Says so much. Having Minato blow through and the second time with Kakashi - bright spots? War really sucks. At least he gets to meet Rin if even for a moment.
Beautiful back story. Builds Raidou's character the way I love.

Secrets That We Keep
Katsuko hating the 3rd. I was confused at first until I read everything. Having Orochimaru be her tormentor and the Sandaime let him go explained it all. Having Sarutobi face down the demon to escape and having Minato survive to remain Hokage is a twist to an old story and I can't wait to see where it all goes.

Fear of the Dark
First of all I have to say - Kakashi still has a Mom!?! This could be interesting. this story was so sweet about a small boy trying to come to grip with his small boy fears and his shinobi way. Don't play with sharp objects until we show you properly how to kill someone. Must have been tough for both parents and child. I have always loved little Kakashi stories and this one is one of my favorites.

No Old Heroes
One of the many sad back stories in the Naruto universe. You told it very well. How do children move on from such a loss? How does anyone?

After the Ending
This broke my heart!!!! While I look forward to the difference from Minato surviving and being the Hokage, his loss while trying to be a Dad and Hokage in a time of devastation is heart wrenching.
I am so looking forward to everything you guys have to offer.
Thanks for sharing.
I cannot tell you how ecstatic I am to see you all writing again! I haven't read anything properly yet -- I just wanted to pop in and welcome you back. I'm really intrigued by the direction you're taking this AU, and looking forward to digging into all the reading.
Okay, first off, after reading everything in one ravenous go, all I have to say is oh my goodness I loved everything. I just wanted to pick up all the characters and give them hugs. I’ll hug the writers too, while I’m at it – or maybe just give you some quick first impressions :)
Don’t Fear the Dark
This was fascinating to me; it is both distinctly childlike (“Stabbing had been the plan, followed by a secretive burial under a pile of big heavy rocks, just to make sure.”) and Kakashi-like (The chief principle had been deny everything.), and combining those two things must not be an easy feat, but you did it excellently.
We Were Giants Once
I loved the banter in this. Good old Ryouma, causing mayhem at all ages.
“Since most of the things Ryouma knew how to write were dirty, she had a valid point.”
That line got me smiling – so did this post entirely, save that very last line. Perfect way to end it, I think. Left me wondering what little Ryouma thought about the sudden serious tone shift.
Burning on the Western Front
I got chills. The offbeat, detached, almost choppy tone was perfect; very appropriate for the setting, but very jarring since it’s so different from Raidou’s usual (“Monday comes, and he almost dies.”). The way Raidou was keeping track of days and weeks throughout the whole thing really pulled it all together. Sidenote – the present tense worked really well for this. I liked it lots.
Suffer the Children
Ooh, this was good. A set-up for things to come, possibly; but oh, Genma. The last third or so, where you explored his thought process about the whole thing, was so sobering and heartbreaking and wonderfully written. This line “He remembered the Hokage of three nights ago—small, almost frail-looking next to his ANBU.An illusion, surely, since everyone knew Sarutobi Hiruzen was the greatest ninja alive.” I loved in particular, because not only is it a great representation of Genma’s thoughts, but it really sets off Sarutobi’s role in this universe.
After the Ending
In the Fallen Leaves verse, I really enjoyed getting to see those occasional snippets of Minato, so I’m thrilled to see him back and alive and well. But my goodness his first impression here was heart-wrenching. It’s so succinct, and it just hits hard with every line. Love love loved it. The paragraph starting with “Minato envies him, all the same.” Had to be my favorite in this. And despite all that, he’s still managing to hold down the fort.
Secrets That We Keep
I’ll preface this by saying I read the bios after I read the threads, so I was so intrigued as to why Katsuko was so distressed – there is just a lot of raw Katsuko in this, and I really enjoyed reading it. It was palpable. You had some really excellent tension thrumming through this whole post.
“She remembers thinking that he’d looked very small for a legend, an old and tired man with guilt weighing heavy on his shoulders.” I loved this line, and I loved the way it clashed with what Genma said about Sarutobi and the way it tried to debunk Minato’s funeral speech all the while.
And those are my first thoughts on the introductions. Thank you guys so, so much for sharing! I’m really excited for whatever you’ve got in store for this project. <3
I'm just getting up to date with the threads and I'm already getting mad fluttering excitement in my chest. I am loving the new ways in which all these characters are meeting, and the subtle changes to their dynamics.
I read these all in one sitting, so my thoughts aren’t completely organized X) forgive any abruptness. I wanted to get my thoughts down while the threads are still fresh in my mind.
I'm gonna take a quick second to fawn over your world-building. I love the idea and execution of the ANBU trials; you guys must have done a lot of planning to get all the little details in (the teams, the hierarchy, the protocol, heck the required first year dorm living), and it makes the whole thing so vivid. I feel like I could stroll down to my local ANBU HQ and sign my name and know what to expect (well, as much as things can be expected in ANBU).
From Here on Out had banter that was to die for. I was in giggles nearly the whole thread, my goodness. All of the exchanges between Katsuko and Raidou were really excellent; not only were they snappy and quick and fun, but you can read the deeper relationship between the two characters through it. So far, Raidou’s making a really great captain, even if he’s still completely new to the idea.
And going along with Raidou settling into being the captain: all of his interactions with Genma were some of my favorites. The way he’d almost forget he was the one getting to lead, or that he Genma would take care of things for him without being asked. They got off to a really great start – though Raidou does seem to have a penchant for inspiring trust into people. :) Plus, their discussions of the other candidates were really interesting. Something that really caught my attention was the fact Raidou got as worried as he did during Kakashi’s jutsu trick. And, on a lighter note, Raidou’s many references to Katsuko. “Ueno Katsuko actually came with a laundry list of standard warnings for the newly introduced…” and “Big chakra, big attitude” had to be my favorites.
Then, Ryouma punched Kakashi and didn’t lose a limb for it. The subtle changes in Kakashi’s character from FL to here is some of the most interesting, to me. He’s still very much Kakashi, but his personality seems a few shades lighter (though still full of depth, I have to say.) The fact he and Ryouma could hold a civil conversation discussing some of the jutsu spoke volumes, to me. I can’t wait to see what his relationship with Ryouma ends up being; they had an interesting start, enough to want to step in and help each other later in the trials, considering Kakashi is “…kind of weird, mostly rude, and scary as hell on the battlefield.” Glad to see he’s still got quite the reputation preceding him – though I suppose Ryouma does too. Seeing Kakashi as a newbie to ANBU is something I’m looking forward to as well.
Once things got going, I don’t think my heart stopped pounding ‘till I’d read through them all. I suppose I should have expected a little chaos, but all the same, I was holding my breath through the trials. Genma and Raidou’s teamwork was flawless (when Genma was radioing back to base, all I could think was “He’s still mother-medic.” And it made me smile a lot.), and I have a feeling we saw 4/5s of a future team on the page there near the end of Run Rabbit Run. But that’s just guesswork. :)
Additionally, I haven’t had any troubles following the POVs. When the action got heavy, I do recall taking a second to reread a sentence to keep myself on track, but nothing jarring. I have to say, the flow between all of your writing is seamless as far as I’m concerned: smooth and unbroken as a quiet creek, and it is a delight to read.
Anyway, thank you all so much for sharing! You’ve got me on the edge of my seat for the next thread <3

PART 1: Kakashi and Ryouma
Hello everyone! Leia here again. Gosh, I'm so happy you guys remembered me! :') Also Nezu, congrats on your play - that is beyond cool! Also, so many new threads up, so I'm going to kind of go over everything in one sitting. I also can't post the entirety of my comment in one go, so it's split with Kakashi and Ryouma in one comment, and Katsu, Genma and Raidou in the other!
Gosh. Gosh. I just - I want to just bundle him up and squeeze him, (which, okay, I admit, I want to do that all the time) but this! Kakashi-chan, trying so hard to be brave and dignified and so, so sweet and intelligent. It makes my heart ache to just read him and Sakumo, and think that it would be gone, so soon. I really liked seeing this glimpse of a very shinobi-esque childhood in 'Don't Fear the Dark'. In Sakumo and Sadayo you can see Kakashi, and that sort of writing just makes me go kind of gooey.
I've always felt that Kakashi deserved so much more than the hand he was given. And to see him again, new, proud, famous and quite rude in the ANBU trials just sends this rush of pleasure and anticipation.
I can't even - Ryouma is just... gorgeous. He might feel the most familiar to me because of how his personality is written feels less different from FL Ryouma, for now.
Cocksure and Punching Kakashi is the Best Thing Ever.Though, this might be my adolescent crush talking. Considering that Kakashi/Ryouma is sort of my OTP, I don't think I contained my squeal when I realised that they were going into meet. Together. In the same thread. Urk. While I am aware that this is a different world from FL and they might not rejoin as lovers, I still am quite excited to read their interactions, romantic or otherwise!
It's also pretty interesting to see him before he's got all his jutsu perfected - its as if he's not as proud of them as he should be. Him talking jutsu to Kakashi was kind of sweet - considering the sort of genius it took for him to create his rot jutsu from scratch, its sorta nice to see it being discussed from one ninjutsu expert to another. It occurs, when reading about the trials, that he really is talented.
He's a bit of a mouthy bastard; I love it. Reading him saved by Kakashi and the rest of the ANBU was like a strange sort of deja vu. It's familiar but so different - and it being in-village and a direct threat of a breach in ANBU is chilling; in FL Konoha always meant safety and home, and to have that put in danger really came across quite starkly to me.
Get Well Soon, Ryouma and Kakashi!

Choose Your Blade / Field of Daggers / Run, Rabbit, Run / Gone to Ground
Choose Your Blade
I guess one of the most fun parts about this is how the way that the characters have change affects the way they interact with each other. And this time around I am noticing a lot more sexual fluidity. ;)
I think it is absolutely hilarious the way that Ryouma is willing to call Kakashi out.
They also feel a lot younger here? Or much more uncertain, immature and less jaded. I LOVE it. I feel like they have something clearer to strive for.
Field of Daggers
Oooh, this is fun. And I really like having the characters all on careful degrees of unequal ground, and the closer look into how ninja assessment and hierachy works.
Run, Rabbit, Run
It is so enjoyable to have the two perspectives here: the hunted, and the huntees. :D It adds a very nice dimension to the story, and also I think really fleshes out the tension of the situation. I also love the ways that Kakashi and Ryouma can be stupid! It, again, shows that they are young and are at the beginning of something.
And a needle in the neck.
Who, if Kakashi was lip-reading correctly, used Kakashi’s name.
Oh, Kakashi. He may be pricklier than a hedgehog, but he does have scruples! The entire cave scene is beautifully tense and the action is great.
Also, the Yellow Flash. I love that he is in this! I think it really changes the feel and the dynamic of the village, and of course his pupils.
Gone to Ground
I think this is really cool as a sort of "getting to know you" piece. It doesn't fall into tropey territory and really shows rather than tells, letting characters infer things rather than being told or knowing outright. Keep the mystery alive. :P

Take Me Back to the Start
I am loving Minato and Naruto in Kakashi's life. Such a change from his normal character. Still hard and definitely a killer, but there is a human side to him here. Naruto with a loving father and Kakashi-niisan...Konoha is a better place. Too bad Ryouma was out. It would be fun to see how he handled little Naruto. I am sure I will get the opportunity to witness that. Kakashi has been dealing with Anbu through his Hokage connections, they must know him pretty well by now. I'm curious why Rin didn't stop by to visit Kakashi. I'm sure that mystery will also be answered.
Really loving this place - the story and the characters. You've kept the action and suspense, but added warmth. Thank you guys so much for sharing.
I adore the interaction between the Yondaime, Naruto and Kakashi - the Yondaime as vulnerable and human, and the way that Naruto has affected Kakashi. The most adorable of bros.
And the Yondaime picking at Kakashi, winding him up but always noticing things - like his interest in Ryouma. xD
And Minato getting mother-henned by everyone, everywhere.
I loved the little mention of Kakashi's awesome mom - cannot wait to hear more about her. In other verses Sakumo completely overshadows her, so I love the directiont that you are taking.
But yes. The fact that Kakashi can be playful here, and hang out happily with little kids, and be more of his age - it's wonderful.

Take Me Back to the Start and Dangerous Game
So with Take Me Back to the Start – I’m still loving Minato; he just radiates good vibes, and it reflects so well onto the other characters. Kakashi’s conversations with him are as close to open as you can get with Kakashi, and that’s fascinating to see. Equally interesting is the way Kakashi interacts with Naruto; I’m still trying to fit ‘babysitting’ and ‘Kakashi’ in the same sentence, but it’s working out quite well. Naruto is so very ninja and so very four-years-old.
Kakashi propped his chin on his hand and wondered what normal civilian children looked like. Their parents must be so bored.
I think my favorite part, though, was when everyone conspired to keep Minato napping.
What Sanda said, about keeping the action but adding the warmth – I definitely agree with that, and I really, really like the directions these threads are going.
Gosh, guys, I’m on the edge of my seat so often with these threads I’m about to fall straight out of my chair. I love that feeling.
What Dark was saying earlier about Kakashi having a less traumatic past really shows when he’s around Ryouma; there’s this little thrill I get every time I see him showing his trust to others; or throwing out little bits of sarcasm that are something closer to playful, rather than scathing. It’s also interesting to see Kakashi’s arrogant side come out during his interview – I had wide eyes, slack jaw, and a little laugh of disbelief during some of his answers.
My jaw also dropped when Ryouma actually considered the prospect of teaching Kakashi his jutsu. Their exchange after Ryouma’s interview (during which I held my breath most of the time) was among my favorites so far. Not to mention, “Worse than an alley cat,” might be my new favorite description for Ryouma.
I remember Five Finger Fillet coming up a few times back in Leaves; I enjoyed that part lots, along with the camaraderie-competitiveness between all the candidates. The side characters are just as vivid as your fully fleshed out main characters.
I adored QM and his stash of weapons. I’m eager to see what Ryouma’s going to end up doing with his; even more than that, though, I’m excited to see their masks.
Apparently constructive criticism counted as less than extreme respect. Kakashi considered a future filled with bugs.
That’s a favorite line of mine.
ALSO I’m really delighted you guys are enjoying my reviews, aaah! Your replies to my replies make me bounce in my chair with excitement, you have no idea. You’re a wonderful bunch and I love getting to chat about your threads with you <33 Thanks for sharing!
I loved the tension in this. And the cameraderie of all the recruits on the other side of the door. The questions they were asked were so interesting!
Also, Ryouma and Kakashi's awkward bonding/flirting/something. I'm loving the way that they consistently bounce off each other (providing entertainment to everyone around them). I feel like a really sincere relationship is forming, in a way, and Kakashi lets him get away with so much.
The way Ryouma's maybe-dyslexia approached here is nicely upfront and really woven into his life and his interactions, and it's great to see the way he gets around it and how it flavours the way he approaches relationships with others. It isn't ignored, and I like that.

When I found Fallen Leaves last summer the sheer amount of amazing stories was exciting and daunting at the same time, so I'm really glad I get to read Legacy from its beginnings.
I just want to say that all of your stories are amazing!! You have no idea how much seeing that you guys updated makes my day.
Loved the kitten imagery of Kakashi and the interactions between the team members, especially Katsuko.
Thank you so much for all the wonderful stories and characters!
I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm loving the rebooted characters and the difference having Yondaime instead of Sandaime has made in them. I very much look forward to seeing how they all progress, and what special hell Katsuko puts them all through.

I just want to say that I am a long time reader, and I am so happy to see your stories again. I actually squealed when I found out about ANBU Legacy. I just finished catching up with all the posts. They are amazing! I love the new direction and MINATO! The alternate-timeline...so excited to see where it goes.
Have a great day, and I will be obsessively checking in for updates! :D

I was a longtime reader of Fallen Leaves, and I finally got the chance to actually sit down and read all the threads here...
...and I may or may not have stayed up 'til 3 in the morning reading it because I just couldn't stop.
I'm really loving it so far! It's a very different take on things than Fallen Leaves was, but all the little differences make it really interesting and I absolutely can't wait to see where everything goes.
I also just want to say that I really love that you guys have a tumblr - it makes keeping up with updates so much easier!
Anyhow I'm just super-excited to see what happens next!
2013-08-13 01:55 am (UTC)
I stumbled upon Fallen Leaves recently (which made my life better!) and wandered over here after I'd read through it.
I'll admit I was wary at first, since the premise and backstory were so different...but that went away completely about four lines into "Don't Fear the Dark." I was absolutely floored by the level of writing and world-building in these new stories! I shouldn't have been surprised, really :)
I'm loving the new interactions and the amazing characterization. I can't wait to see more Team Six banter. They're hysterical together! I'll miss Raidou's little brothers, but I think seeing him in a leadership role will be interesting, while playing off the "big brother" role he seems to fill so well. It was also fun (and very different) to see Kakashi take up that role with Naruto. I'm excited to see how the new team situation effects Genma and Raidou's relationship, and what comes out of Ryouma and Katsuko's "unholy alliance"...
Anyway, sorry that was a bit long and rambling...I really just wanted to say I love what I've read so far, and can't wait to see what you come up with next!
